From the Pros
13 tips from the movers who do this every day. Pack smarter, protect what matters, and make move day smooth.
Whether you're packing yourself or want to know what to expect, these tips save you time, money, and headaches on move day.
Begin with out-of-season items and things you rarely use. Getting the bulk packed well before move day keeps you calm when it counts.
Empty dresser drawers of breakables, perishables, and prohibited items. Drawers packed with soft clothing can usually stay as-is.
Isolate knives, skewers, and other sharp items in their own wrapped bundle. Keep them clearly separated so nothing gets damaged and no one gets hurt.
Never separate matching items or components. Bag small hardware in a plastic bag and tape it directly to the piece it belongs to.
Wind electrical cords neatly and secure them before packing. A loose cord is a tripping hazard and a tangled mess waiting to happen.
Wrap fine china, crystal, and delicate pieces individually in clean, unprinted paper. Towels and tissue paper work great as extra cushion.
Start each carton with 2 to 3 inches of crushed paper at the bottom. Fill gaps firmly between layers so nothing shifts in transit.
Pack delicate items in small boxes first, then nest those into one larger carton with crushed paper filling the gaps. Fewer boxes, better protection.
A good box closes without force and without bending inward. Too loose means shifting; too heavy means a torn bottom. Aim for a solid, firm pack.
Tape cartons tightly. For anything valuable or irreplaceable, keep it separate and let your Moving Guys crew know before move day so they can give it extra attention.
Write the destination room on every carton as you close it. Unloading goes dramatically faster when each box already knows where it belongs.
List the contents on the side of each box and keep a running master list somewhere safe. Numbering and color-coding by room takes it to the next level.
Pro Tip
Tape a sign on every room door at your new home before the movers arrive. When each carton is already labeled with a room name, your crew can drop boxes directly without asking where anything goes. No redirecting, no confusion, no wasted trips.
